Eligibility

<h1>Class Eligibility</h1>
<p>1.0 Definition of Classes</p>
<p>1.1.1 STANDARD CLASS: – This class is designed to encompass those vehicles of a totally standard nature except for those items which, for competitor safety or standard practice get replaced through the life of a vehicle (i.e. suspension). By severely limited modifications allowed within class, the introduction level of motor sport can continue to flourish and encourage the recycling of otherwise unusable motorcars, (providing the integrity of their safety is not in question).</p>
<p>1.1.2 MODIFIED CLASS: – This class is intended for the more serious weekend racer who still wants to use (or be able to use) his/her car on the road, though not necessarily so. This class permits weight reduction and further power modifications over standard class. This class includes all vehicles not complying with standard class or specials class specifications.</p>
<p>These class designations satisfy those outlined in the CAMS manual for: – “Rally cars” and “Road registered cars”</p>
<p>1.1.3 SPECIALS CLASS: – All vehicles not complying with the above two classes fall into this class. Any vehicle with a relocated engine, or those that have extensive body changes to fit engines or transmissions. Cars that are four wheel drive (standard or modified) or fitted with different suspension types to original.</p>
<p>1.2 CLASS DIVISIONS:</p>
<p>A – up to 1300 standard<br />
B – 1301cc to 1600cc standard<br />
C – 1601cc to 2000cc standard<br />
D – 2001cc and over standard</p>
<p>E – Up to 1300cc modified<br />
F – 1301cc to 1600cc modified<br />
G – 1601cc to 2000cc modified<br />
H – 2001cc and over modified</p>
<p>J -juniors</p>
<p>K- Females</p>
<p>L – Specials and All Wheel Drive<br />
2.0 BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF VEHICLES IN ALL CLASSES</p>
<p>2.1 SAFETY</p>
<p>2.1.1 All vehicles must be fitted with a fully charged and operational fire extinguisher (securely fitted) which complies with AS 1841, (except AS 1841-2), AS 1846 or AS 1848 and CAMS requirements.</p>
<p>Please note BCF/ HALON FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE ILLEGAL.</p>
<p>2.1.2 Mud flaps must be fitted to the driving wheels as a minimum. Specials must be fitted with mud guards on all 4 wheels.</p>
<p>2.1.3 Whilst competing, driver must wear an approved crash helmet</p>
<p>2.1.4 Driver must be restrained by a minimum of a fully functional lap-sash seat belt considered to be in good order.</p>
<p>2.1.5 ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE A MUFFLER OR SPARK ARRESTOR</p>
<p>2.1.6 All vehicles must be fitted with two (2) independent fastening systems of limited extendability and adequate strength to hold the bonnet or panels closed. Bodily unmodified production cars manufactured after 1/11/1973 and other CAMS approved cars with forward hinged bonnets may utilize the original unmodified ‘manufacturers’ component’ for closing the bonnet without the use of a secondary restraint.</p>
<p>2.2 WHEEL/TYRES<br />
Replacement of steel wheels with alloy equivalents is permitted as is widening of steel wheels provided such change does not foul body or suspension and safety of competitor is not compromised.<br />
Wheels/tyres may not protrude past bodywork. Wheel arch extensions etc. are allowed to be used to accommodate larger wheel/tyre combinations.</p>
<p><strong>No</strong> rally, off road type or <strong>Winter tread</strong> tyres are permitted. <strong>Tyres with a square shoulder and/or agressive tread pattern are prohibited. Â The Chief Scrutineer and Clerk of Course have the right to reject or allow tyres at their disgression.</strong></p>
<p>ENQUIRIES REGARDING TECHNICAL ELLIGIBILITY OF TYRES ARE TO BE FORWARDED TO AUTOCROSS COMMITTEE WHOSE DECISION WILL BE FINAL.</p>
<p>2.3 GENERAL</p>
<p>2.3.1 All competing vehicles must have their Geelong Motor Sport Complex vehicle log book on board and up to date. It must be produced at scrutineenng to be able to compete.</p>
<p>2.3.2 Rollover protection is strongly recommended and is essential on vehicles without a roof or where the roof structure has been modified from original specification.</p>
<p>2.3.3 Vehicles must have on their coachwork a blue triangle of 150mm sides that indicates the battery location.</p>
<p>2.3.4 Exhaust system must include a muffler or spark arrester.</p>
<p>2.4 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT ROAD REGISTERED<br />
2.4.1 Vehicles must be fitted with a scatter shield if required under the provisions of Section 6, Schedule M.</p>
<p>2.4.2 Must not be fitted with any type of steering column locking device.</p>
<p>2.4.3 Must be fitted with a strap or suitable cross member that will prevent the tail shaft falling to the ground due to failure of any component.<br />
3.0 STANDARD CLASS SPECIFICATIONS</p>
<p>NOTE: – NO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES IN THIS CLASS</p>
<p>3.1 GENERAL</p>
<p>3.1.1 Vehicles should be presented in a basically ROADWORTHY state with the obvious exception of noise level.</p>
<p>3.1.2 No rust in structurally important areas should exist – e.g. sub frame, chassis or ‘A” pillars etc.</p>
<p>3.1.3 All headlights must be fully covered in order to prevent glass falling on to the track in the event of breakage. The generally accepted method is to cover the lenses with clear contact adhesive.</p>
<p>3.2 ENGINE<br />
Engine must be of original type fitted by the vehicle manufacturer including capacity and remain unchanged from standard specifications for that vehicle.</p>
<p>3.3 INDUCTION</p>
<p>3.3.1 Induction must remain completely standard as per original manufacturers specifications. No change to operation of linkages is permitted (wiring linkages, disabling vacuum secondary etc.). No internal milling of venturis is permitted however rejetting is allowed. Air filter elements are free but original housing must be retained.</p>
<p>3.3.2 Any forced induction method is not permitted unless it is factory fitment. Forced induction where legal will incur a multiplication of engine capacity to the current factor in the relevant CAMS regulation (Capacity X 1.7= class capacity)</p>
<p>3.4 EXHAUST<br />
Original manifold(s) must remain fitted and functional.<br />
Exhaust is free beyond manifold save that system must be basically sound and safe, mounted properly and must exit exhaust gases at original location.<br />
ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE A MUFFELER OR A SPARK ARESTORS</p>
<p>3.5 DRIVELINE</p>
<p>3.5.1 Transmission should be mounted in original location and drive original axle locations and numbers but is otherwise free.</p>
<p>3.5.2 Differential type is to remain as per factory installed.</p>
<p>3.5.3 No changing mounting points, location or method is allowed.</p>
<p>3.6 SUSPENSION<br />
3.6.1 Suspension dampers, springs and sway bars are free to change, add or delete.</p>
<p>3.6.2 Any suspension mounting points must NOT be changed (tramp bars, axle location arms, inner pivot points or strut location), except in the case of sway bar fitment where none were previously fitted.</p>
<p>3.6.3 No additional adjustability to suspension geometry may be added where not included by manufacturer, (e.g. camber adjustment, caster adjustment or shortening of radius rods etc).</p>
<p>3.6.4 No rose joints may be used in suspension construction.</p>
<p>3.6.5 Vehicles may be lowered, but no lower than current roadworthy regulations allow.</p>
<p>3.6.6 Replacement of worn parts with equivalent standard specification parts is permitted.</p>
<p>3.7 BRAKES</p>
<p>3.7.1 To remain in same, configuration as original (disc/drum or disc/disc).<br />
Size of combinations is free although original number of caliper pistons or wheel cylinders must remain as per original.</p>
<p>3.7.2 No balance bar or proportioning system of an externally adjustable nature may be incorporated where not a factory fitment.</p>
<p>3.7.3 Fitment of a dual hydraulic circuit is encouraged where a single circuit was original equipment.</p>
<p>3.8 BODY</p>
<p>3.8.1 Body must remain standard in general appearance in that all exterior mirrors, lights, bumpers etc must remain fitted.<br />
Rear deck spoilers, front spoilers, air dams and wheel arch flares/moldings are allowed.</p>
<p>3.8.2 Weight reduction is not permitted.</p>
<p>3.8.3 Original materials of construction must remain (no replacement of panels or windows with lighter materials is allowed.)</p>
<p>3.8.4 Interior must be complete with all seats, door trims, roof lining, carpet etc. but not necessarily of original manufacturer.</p>
<p>3.8.5 Dash must be of original full width design and still incorporate Speedo.</p>
<p>3.8.6 Fitting of a racing harness and rollover protection is encouraged. Minimum of three (3) point harnesses in good working order must be used. MINIMAL removal of interior trim is allowed only in order to fit cage or harness correctly. This does not mean removal of the entire back seat.</p>
<p>3.9 ELECTRICAL<br />
Everything stock or facsimile of should be instated.<br />
Windscreen wipers and washers should be operational.</p>
<p>3.10 WHEELS and TYRES<br />
Refer to basic requirements — See section 2.2 WHEELS/TYRES</p>
<p>4.0 MODIFIED CLASS SPECIFICATIONS</p>
<p>4.1 ENGINE: –<br />
Engine must remain in original location.<br />
Only replacement engines fitted to the vehicle without extensive alteration to the engine compartment (i.e. engine mounts and the odd hole or dent only) are permitted.<br />
Make of replacement engine must be from the same manufacturer as the vehicle. E.g. Datsun/Datsun, Toyota/Toyota, Ford/Windsor, Cleveland, Ford, Holden/Holden, Chevy.</p>
<p>Original number of cylinders must remain.</p>
<p>4.2 INDUCTION<br />
Induction is free.<br />
Forced induction is permitted but does incur a multiplication of engine capacity by the factor specified in the relevant CAMS regulation for class capacity determination, (Capacity X l .7= Class).</p>
<p>4.3 WHEELS/TYRES<br />
Refer to Basic Requirements — See section 2.2 WHEELS/TYRES</p>
<p>4.4 EXHAUST<br />
Exhaust is free.<br />
Side pipes may be fitted but exhaust gas is not permitted to be exited underneath the vehicle.<br />
ALL CARS MUST HAVE A MUFFLER OR SPARK ARRESTOR</p>
<p>4.5 DRIVELINE<br />
Components must be in the original location and drive the same wheels as original and not require extensive body alteration. Otherwise is free.</p>
<p>4.6 BRAKES<br />
Original location otherwise is free.</p>
<p>4.7 SUSPENSION<br />
Original type (McPherson strut/independent/wishbone or Trailing arm etc) must be kept. Extra control arms and rose joints are permitted.</p>
<p>4.8 BODY<br />
Standard shape must be kept. Fiber glass/plastic/aluminum may be used to lighten vehicle. Removal of non-structurally critical parts, e.g. bumpers grilles etc. is permitted.<br />
Re-enforcement is allowed, e.g. seam welding.<br />
Add on flares, spoilers etc. are permitted provided they are safe in design and fitment.</p>
<p>4.9 ELECTRICAL<br />
All present and operational if registered and a reasonable replica if not registered.</p>
<p>4.10 INTERIOR<br />
Must be fitted with two (2) front seats not necessarily of original manufacturer otherwise is free.</p>
<p>4.11 SAFETY<br />
Minimum of four point, (2 shoulder, 2 hip straps) harness for driver and roller hoop is strongly recommended.<br />
This is a consideration solely for competitor safety.</p>
<p>5.0 SPECIALS CLASS SPECIFATIONS</p>
<p>5.1 This class consists of vehicles intended for racing only and four wheel drive vehicles.</p>
<p>5.2 Everything is free, subject to CAMS general requirements. This class is intended for anything that does not fit into the previous two classes e.g. Cars with relocated engines, cars that require significant body changes to fit engines or transmissions, cars with different suspension types to original.</p>
<p>APPENDIX A</p>
<p>ALL VEHICLES MUST HAVE MUFFELER OR SPARK ARESTORS</p>
<p>1) “Factory equipment/fitment” or “performance enhanced” where used in these rules does not allow the use of Factory Racing teams unless the same equipment was able to be ordered on a normal street car (not any up-spec enhanced versions) Performance equipment manufactured by sub-companies, be they in-house or contracted is also not considered “Factory” for the purpose of these rules. Therefore products by Weisner, H.D.T, C.D.T.,H.S.V., Nismo, Qeordini, T.R.D., Cosworth, Lotus etc. is not allowed.<br />
The fact that overseas models of some cars have better features or options does not make them legal in this case as “Factory” items.</p>
<p>2) Motor sport is dangerous. It is expected that any modification or fabrication carried out will be done so in a sensible, responsible, safe and structurally sound manner. Any competitor found foul of this condition will be dealt with and competition denied. The Directors decision on the day will be final.</p>
<p>3) It is suggested that any doubt about the legality of any vehicle changes be checked with the AUTOCROSS COMMITTEE well in advance of any event.</p>
<p>4) The committee reserves the right to re-classify a vehicle if it does not comply with the rules.</p>
<p>5) The rules and especially the spirit of the Avalon competition will also be upheld by the committee and hopefully the competitors.</p>

<p><strong>Q. What do the scrutineers look for when I bring my car to race?</strong></p>

<p><strong>Q. What sort of racing do you do in GMSC?</strong></p>
<p>A. At the moment we run Autocross events at the Geelong Motor Sport Complex out at Avalon, Victoria.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What’s an Autocross?</strong></p>
<p>A. The definition by CAMS is as follows. Autocross is a type of event providing competition essentially at club level, and involving timed laps of an earth, grass, gravel or similar circuit by day or by night or both. In our events this involves each competitor doing a series of single timed laps of our circuit. We generally do about 6 individual laps depending on how smoothly things run during the day.</p>
<p><strong>Q. Do I need a special licence to drive in an Autocross?</strong></p>
<p>A. Yes, you need to have a CAMS 2S licence. This can be organised for you on the morning of an Autocross or prior through CAMS. You also need to be a member of a Motorsport Club. We can help you join GMSC on the day if you aren’t a member of another club.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What car can I drive in an Autocross?</strong></p>
<p>A. Pretty much anything with 4 wheels if it is safe. We have classes based on engine size and whether your vehicle is modified or not.</p>
<p><strong>Q. Does my car need anything modified on it to race?</strong></p>
<p>A. Quite often just a few things need to be done to prepare a road car for racing in one of our autocross events. Read the information on going through Scrutineering for details but a short list would be.</p>
<ul>
<li>Fit a fire extinguisher (bolted to car with a metal bracket)</li>
<li>Check that your seat belt and seat is in good condition and replace/repair as necessary</li>
<li>Have at least one return spring on the throttle shaft</li>
<li>Mud flaps need to be fitted to the driven wheels</li>
<li>Your car must have a exhaust muffler fitted</li>
<li>All fuel lines must be in excellent condition</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Q. Do I need a racing suit?</strong></p>
<p>A. No, just long pants and long sleeves in a non flammable material is fine.</p>
<p><strong>Q. What do I need to do when I’m racing in an Autocross event?</strong></p>
<p>A. There are a few main things you need to do on race day.</p>
<ol>
<li>Turn up and get your car ready for scrutineering</li>
<li>Line up you car and have it pass through scrutineering</li>
<li>See the event co-ordinator and enter the event. You will need your CAMS licence, Club membership, a filled in entry form and the entry fee. You will also get a number to be fitted to your car. If you have multiple entries for the one car, you will get multiple numbers; just make sure that when the car is racing the number displayed and the driver match.</li>
<li>Turn up for the Drivers’ Briefing. This will give you up-to-date information on how the event is to be run and any other information that may be useful.</li>
<li>After the drivers’ briefing there usually is a parade lap. So get in you car and join the queue to check out the track. This is a slow observation lap so passengers can be taken, however no racing (or even wheel spin) will be tolerated.</li>
<li>When your number is soon to be up (we prefer the cars to race in numerical order) grab your helmet and line up to take your lap.</li>
